United States of America To find out all the events and how to get involved subscribe to the FTMI announcements list FTMI Sacramento Charlie Parkhurst Chapter Charley Darkey Parkhurst (1812-1879) was the first documented anatomically female person to ever vote in America. He was a famous stagecoach driver and early California settler. Parkhurst, also known as One Eyed Charley or Six-Horse Charley, was born as Charlotte Darkey Parkhurst in Lebanon, New Hampshire and grew up in an orphanage there. He worked as a stable boy in Worcester, Massachusetts and later in Providence, Rhode Island. About 1849 he began working as a stage driver for the California Stage Company. Shortly after arriving he lost the use of one eye after a kick from a horse. He had a reputation as one of the finest stage coach drivers on the west coast. Parkhurst retired from driving some years later in Watsonville, California. After lumbering, cattle ranching and raising chickens in Aptos, California he moved into a small cabin near Watsonville where he died on December 18, 1879 of cancer. When the neighbors came to the cabin to lay out the body for burial, they discovered that the renowned stagecoach driver was anatomically female. The San Francisco Morning Call wrote on December 28, 1879: He was in his day one of the most dexterous and celebrated of the famous California drivers... the fearless Charley Parkhurst... In 1955 the Pajaro Valley Historical Association erected a monument on Parkhurst's grave site that in 1868 he was historically the first documented anatomically female person to ever vote in America. Reed Erickson was a great philanthropist who single-handedly supported the entire trans movement through founding the Erickson Educational Foundation. He provided support for the ONE Institute affiliated with the University of Southern California and funded the work of endocrinologist Dr. Harry Benjamin MD, Dr. "Mickey" Milton Diamond, surgeon Dr. Donald Laub MD at Stanford University Gender Identity Clinic and Dr. Paul Walker. His home was in Ojai in San Buenaventura County in California. Twentieth century university hospital based gender clinics, early international conferences on transgender health care held throughout the world and the publications of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health were all funded by FTM Reed Erickson. FTMI Atlanta Trans(forming) Chapter FTMI Georgia Atlanta Trans(forming) Chapter meets last Sundays 2-5PM in Atlanta http://trans-forming.org/ Dr. Maxwell Scott Anderson (August 26, 1956 – January 14, 2010) served on the Board of Directors of FTM International and appeared in the documentary film Southern Comfort. He was a native of Atlanta who had lived in Chicago then Fort Lauderdale where he led the Eden Society. Maxwell was a tax accountant and a well known therapist in Atlanta who transitioned in the mid 80s. In 2000 he co-chaired the 10th Southern Comfort convention in Atlanta. He died of brain cancer at the age of 53. FTMI Georgia StealthWorld Chapter FTMI Georgia Atlanta StealthWorld Chapter meets regularly. FTM hero of color E. Craft's story is told in the book Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom. An African American with light skin, Craft dressed as a young white southern planter with his spouse William as his body servant and the heroic couple escaped in 1848 by train to Philadelphia and later to Boston. In danger of enslavement again by the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, the pair fled to England and eventually they returned as free citizens to Georgia where they set up a school for African diaspora children. FTMI Albuquerque Dr. Alan L. Hart Chapter FTMI Albuquerque Dr. Alan L. Hart Chapter meets monthly in Albuquerque http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ABQ_FTM_Group/ Dr. Alan L. Hart, MD (1890-1962) was a physician in New Mexico and published author. He successfully transitioned before hormone therapy was available. At his grandfather's farm he dressed and lived as a boy, playing with boys' toys made for him by his grandfather. His grandparents' obituaries in 1921 and 1924 both list him as a grandson. When Hart was 12 the family moved to Albany Oregon. He continued to spend the holidays at his grandfather's farm, living there as a boy among his male friends. He was featured in an article in the Halls Summit Kansas News June 10, 1921. He wrote as Robert Allen in local newspapers, school and college publications. He graduated from Albany College (now Lewis & Clark College) in 1912 and Stanford University and received his MD from the University of Oregon in Portland in 1917 with top academic honors. In Germany in 1906-7 Karl M. Baer, born Martha Baer, had gender affirmation surgery setting precedent for Hart's transition. He obtained gender affirmation hysterectomy at the University of Oregon Medical School over the 1917-1918 winter vacation then legally changed his name. He held positions in tuberculosis sanitariums and x-ray clinics in New Mexico. He obtained a Masters degree in radiology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1930 and a Masters degree in public health from Yale in 1948. Hart was a prominent figure in the tuberculosis field, and for the last 16 years of his life he headed mass x-ray programs in Connecticut for the State Health Department. He wrote many articles and published These Mysterious Rays (Harper & Brothers) still a standard text on x-rays, translated into several languages. After WWII male hormones became available which he prescribed for himself. He was married for many years, gave numerous lectures, led many organizations and was vice president of his local Unitarian Church council. He wrote four novels, published by Norton in 1935, 1936 and 1937 and Harper in 1942, reviewed in The New York Times, The New York Herald-Tribune, Saturday Review of Literature and other leading publications of the times. His work in TB prevention saved hundreds of thousands of lives. The interest on his estate is donated annually to research in cancer. FTMI Ohio Dr. M. Edwards Walker Chapter FTMI Ohio Dr. M. Edwards Walker, MD (1832-1919) is the only doctor to ever win the Congressional Medal of Honor. The hero of the Civil War, Dr. Walker wore men's clothes and advocated for an end to laws that discriminated against trans men for wearing men's clothing. He was born on November 26, 1832 in Oswego, New York, into an abolitionist family. His birthplace on the Bunker Hill Road is marked with a historical marker. He graduated from Syracuse Medical College in 1855 at age 21. Dr. Walker wore trousers and a man's uniform jacket and carried two pistols at all times as he worked as a field surgeon near the Union front lines for almost two years (including Fredericksburg and in Chattanooga after the Battle of Chickamauga), then was appointed assistant surgeon of the 52nd Ohio Infantry. After spending four months in a Richmond prison, he was released back to the 52nd Ohio as a contract surgeon. Dr. Walker was awarded the nation's highest honor, the Medal of Honor, by President Andrew Johnson the 11th of November 1865. He wore full men's evening dress to lecture on women's rights and was elected president of the National Dress Reform Association in 1866. He invented the return postcard for registered mail. He wrote extensively, including a biography, Hit, and a second book, Unmasked. His life partner Belva Lockwood was by his side for decades. He died in Oswego on February 21, 1919. A US postage stamp honoring Dr. Walker was issued on June 10, 1982.
Jake Nash MS President of FTMI Ohio Dr. M. Edwards Walker Chapter is an experienced leader of FTM groups. Jacob received the TSELF General Achievement Award for his Cleveland State University, Master in Psychology, Diversity Professional Specialization. As President of FTMI Ohio Jake was honored with two Illumination Awards at Transgender Day of Remembrance in Cleaveland in 2007, Transgender Activist of the Year and Transgender Leader of the Year. Ohio refuses to correct the birth certificates of post-transitioned FTMs, and FTMI Ohio is working to change that. FTMI Philadelphia Sgt. Frank Mayne Chapter Sgt. Frank Mayne, assigned as Frances Day at birth, enlisted in the 126th Pennsylvania Infantry and was mortally wounded while serving in the Civil War. Sgt. John Evans, assigned as Mary Owens at birth, was discovered to have female anatomy after he was wounded in the arm. He returned home to Pennsylvania to a warm reception and press coverage after serving for eighteen months. An 1896 newspaper story about a soldier assigned as Mary Stevens Jenkins at birth who died in 1881, reports that he enlisted in a Pennsylvania regiment when still a student, remained in the army two years, received several wounds, and was discharged without anyone ever aware that he had female anatomy. FTMI Memphis Willmer M. Broadnax Chapter Willmer "Little Ax" M. Broadnax, (December 28, 1916-1994) also known as "Little Axe," "Wilbur," "Willie," and "Wilmer," was one of the great post-war Black gospel quartet singers. An African-American man of short stature with glasses and a high, powerful tenor voice, he worked and recorded with many of the most famous and influential groups of his day. Broadnax was born in Houston in 1916. After moving to Southern California in the mid-40s, he joined the Southern Gospel Singers, a group which performed primarily on weekends. He formed his own quartet, the Golden Echoes as lead singer. In 1949 they recorded a single of "When the Saints Go Marching In" for Specialty Records. In 1950, Broadnax joined the Spirit of Memphis Quartet. Along with Broadnax, the group featured two other leads, Jethro Bledsoe and Silas Steele. This was one of the most impressive quartets in history. The Spirit of Memphis Quartet recorded for King Records, and Broadnax appeared on these releases until 1952. Shortly after he worked with the Fairfield Four, and, in the beginning of the 60s, as one of the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi. Until 1965 he headed a quartet called "Little Axe and the Golden Echoes," releasing singles on Peacock Records as he continued to record with the Blind Boys into the 70s and 80s. Upon his death in 1994, it was discovered that Broadnax was anatomically female. FTMI Texas Mario Martino Chapter Mario Martino wrote the first full length autobiography of an FTM who successfully transitioned with hormones and surgery. His memoir inspired countless FTM readers. He was a healthcare professional and set up a counseling service along with his wife that guided men through the transition process and answered hundreds of letters from readers with questions about transition.
